Two different things are being measured.
Our breathable (solvent-based) line was tested at SGS SERCOVAM in France under NF ISO 2528, the dish method for water vapour transmission rate. Across five test cups at 38 °C and 90% relative humidity, the dried film transmitted an average of 194 g/m² per 24 hours (report RES 117034 A). The full report is published on our Certificates page.
That figure is a rate, not an open door. A fingernail is about 1 cm², so 194 g/m²·24h works out to roughly 19 mg per nail per day — micrograms per minute. A visible damp patch on paper needs tens of milligrams, so a few minutes on a tissue is not expected to show anything. This is not a shortcoming; it is what the measurement means.
Vapour permeability and liquid permeability are different properties. Breathable rainwear membranes, roofing underlays, medical dressings and diaper backsheets are all designed to pass water vapour while holding back liquid water. A microporous nail film behaves the same way, so “the drop did not come through the paper” does not refute the measured vapour transmission — it answers a different question.
A home test has no driving force. The laboratory maintains a continuous humidity gradient across the film — 90% on one side, dry on the other — for 24 hours. On a tissue at room temperature, with the same humidity on both faces, that gradient is absent. And a 24-hour measurement cannot be reproduced in 30 seconds.
Painting polish straight onto paper tests a paper-and-polish composite, not the film. The solvent is drawn into the fibres, so the film forms inside the pore structure rather than as a separate layer, and it seals the very capillaries the test depends on. Thickness is also uncontrolled, and flux falls in proportion to thickness. This is why the standard requires the film to be lifted off and measured free-standing.
Our water-based line is different — and there, a paper test does work. EuroLab (Istanbul, inspection report 2025110755) used a liquid-contact procedure: a fully cured free film placed on blotting paper, 2–3 drops of pure water rubbed with a fingertip, wetting the paper beneath in approximately 4–5 seconds. You can repeat it at home: apply the polish to glass, let it dry completely, peel the film off whole, place it on blotting paper, then rub a couple of drops of water onto it. Applying the polish directly onto the paper will not work, for the reason above.

Regarding permeable nail polish, it is important to understand that the argument abouthalal is based on its porous nature. Permeable nail polish does not stay on thenail as a rigid structure. In the Wesam Charkawi translation of Nural-Idah, oily substances such as beeswax and body oil are compared to nailpolish.These arealso mentioned in Hasan Shurunbulali’s original Nur al-Idah script.Shurunbulali mentions that candles and oily substances make ablution invalid.Allah says:When a faithful servant makes ablution and rinses his mouth, wrong deedsabandon him. If he rinses his nose, wrong deeds abandon him. When he washes hisface, wrong deeds abandon him even from beneath his eyelashes. When he washeshis hands, wrong deeds abandon him, otherwise they even stay under his nails.When he wipes his head, wrong deeds abandon him even from his ears. And when hewashes his feet, wrong deeds abandon him even from beneath his toenails.“Allah doesnot intend to create difficulty for you (by orderingablution and ghusl).
